dyeing with cochenealWeaver Ellen Good established her home studio in Ompah 1981 after receiving a BFA in textile design from Rochester Institute of Technology and has been creating one of a kind and small production textiles ever since.

She has always been interested in dye techniques which are intrinsic to the woven process.  Her newest work utilizes a  resist dye technique called 'Loom Controlled “Shibori”. During weaving separate sturdy yarns are laid into the material according to a pattern. After the piece is taken off the loom these yarns are pulled and tied which causes the material to gather in tight folds. When the weaving is dyed the dye does not penetrate into the folds. After dyeing, the Shibori ties are cut, the gathers are smoothed out and the design is revealed.

Her work makes use of natural, fibre reactive, and vat dyes and colour discharge. The dyes are applied during different stages of the weaving and gathering process to produce colorful designs in the woven material.
